On October 21st, the inauguration ceremony of the Four Shandong University- Karolinska Institute Collaborative Laboratories was held on Baotuquan Campus of SDU. An agreement of collaborative laboratories was signed by Zhang Rong, President of Shandong University, and Anders Hamsten, Vice-Chancellor of Karolinska Institute (KI), who jointly inaugurated the collaborative laboratories for cardiovascular research, cancer research, stem cell research and global health studies. Vice President of SDU Zhang Yongbing attended the activities.
At the ceremony, Zhang welcomed the delegation from KI, talked about both sides’ cooperation situation and expressed his confidence in the prospect of future cooperation between the two schools.
He stated that the two schools have a good foundation of exchange and cooperation and they also have wonderful achievements in scientific research, student exchange, talent cultivation and alumni affairs.
In addition, there has been much student and teacher exchange which has benefited both sides greatly. He believed that the creation of cooperative laboratories will deepen both sides’ friendship and promote common development.
Hamsten expressed that, Shandong University is Karolinska Institute’s most intimate partner in China, and the completion of the laboratories is not only a historic achievement of both sides’ friendly relations, but also a new starting point of the future cooperation.
He said that Sweden and China enjoy a long history of friendship, and KI and SDU also have a profound friendship. Many alumni in KI have obtained encouraging results on their own work positions after they return, which laid a solid foundation for the cooperation between the two schools. Furthermore, relying on the four collaborative research laboratories, the two schools will deepen their cooperation with the aim of enhancing overall global health.
Previous to the ceremony, the delegates paid a visit to the collaborative laboratory for cardiovascular research. Hamsten also make a lecture titled “Karolinska Institutet and the future of medicine”. The officials of Karolinska Institutet Katarina Drakenberg, Li Nailin and Chen Luni, as well as officials of QIlu Medicine Department, International Affairs Department, The Second Hospital, and the four collaborative laboratories from Shandong University, all attended the related activities.
Karolinska Institutet is one of the world´s leading medical universities. Since 1901 the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has selected the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine. Ever since Shandong University and Karolinska Institutet signed the collaborative agreement, a total of more than seventy teachers and students of SDU have visit KI for joint scientific research and learning exchange, and the jointly published papers’ number up to 75. In addition, a famous scholar Professor Göran Hassaon from KI has already been appointed as an honorary professor of SDU on March, 2014.
