From October 18 to 19, a delegation led by Mohammad H. Qayoumi, President of San Jose State University (SJSU), USA, paid a visit to Shandong University in Jinan campus and Qingdao campus. Zhang Rong, President of Shandong University, had a discussion with President Qayoumi and singed an Interscholastic Letter of Intent for Cooperation on Joint Program with him, in teaching and researching exchange, scientific research, teacher and student exchange, and the global education project cooperation.
Zhang introduced the basic information about SDU and said that SJSU and SDU’s Qingdao campus, located in the Silicon Valley, USA and the Blue Silicon Valley, China, respectively, will instill energy into the development of their areas and even China and the U.S..
He said that the two schools can cooperate stage by stage. They can carry out the collaboration in joint training of graduates and postgraduates, as well as set up lectures to teach students how to start a business and make innovations at the first stage, and then make cooperation in scientific research, such as in the fields of software engineering, mass media and marine biology.
He also expressed his hope that San Jose State University can encourage the American students and the other international students to study or visit Shandong University in the future.
President Qayoumi was willing to start the cooperation in the field of software engineering and make the most of Qingdao Campus’s geographical advantage and abundant resources advantage, based on their own existing research foundation, to carry on substantive cooperation.
During the discussing, Prof. Andrew Hsu, Dean of Engineering College, Prof. Ray Chen, Director of Electrical Engineering Department, both from SJSU, introduced the situation of their school’s Engineering College and Centre for Innovation and Enterprise. Officials form Shandong University’s International Affairs Department, Centre for Science and Technology and School of Physics, also attended the discussing. In addition, the delegates also visit the Qingdao Campus.
